A Relaxing Way to Arrive in London: In-Room Afternoon Tea Experience
After a long-haul flight, the last thing you may want to do is get dressed up and head back out. So why not have one of London’s quintessential experiences waiting for you instead?
My husband and I wanted to do something special for our birthdays this year. With him turning 40, we thought a big trip would be a great way to celebrate. And with our birthdays only six days apart, it was the perfect excuse to make one trip feel like a celebration for both of us.
We had been wanting to visit Europe, and London in particular, but only had the opportunity to do it now. As two people who love afternoon tea, we thought there was no better place to indulge in it than where the tradition began. In fact, afternoon tea became one of the little themes of our trip, with several experiences already booked at some of London's well-known hotels.
But I wanted to do something a little more personal for my husband. I thought it would be fun to arrange a surprise afternoon tea experience for him, in addition to the ones we had already planned. The only question was when.
Travel can be both exciting and exhausting. For us, the dread often comes from the long hours of sitting and waiting in a tiny, enclosed space. Since the pandemic, there is also the added reality of sharing that space with a cabin full of strangers who may or may not be feeling well. Still, all of that is easy to overlook when you know there is a wonderful destination waiting at the other end. There is something especially comforting about arriving somewhere new and knowing that a little luxury is waiting to help you unwind after the journey.
That got me thinking about how I wanted our arrival in London to feel. I thought, what if we had afternoon tea as soon as we arrived? But after a long international flight, the thought of having to get ready, leave the hotel, and make our way to an afternoon tea appointment felt like it might take away from the relaxing experience I wanted for us. Then I thought, why not have afternoon tea waiting for us in our room?
As it turned out, our hotel offered an in-room afternoon tea experience, which was exactly what I wanted. I coordinated everything with the guest relations team and explained that I wanted it to be a surprise birthday celebration for my husband. They were wonderful throughout the planning process, communicating with me regularly and making sure they understood exactly how I wanted everything to be prepared.
One of my main concerns was freshness. Since we would be arriving after a long international flight, I was worried that preparing the food too far in advance might compromise its quality. The team was very responsive to this concern and coordinated our arrival time with the preparation of the afternoon tea so that the food and tea would be as fresh as possible when we arrived.
I even asked whether they could include a Paddington Bear teddy as part of the surprise, since my husband adores Paddington. They happily sourced the bear and included it with the afternoon tea, which was a thoughtful touch and made the experience feel much more personal.
The Afternoon Tea
The afternoon tea was beautifully presented in our room. The sandwiches, proper teacups and saucers, teapot, and tiered cake stand with the scones and desserts were neatly arranged on a white-clothed portable table. The tea was provided separately in a thermal kettle to keep it warm until we were ready to pour it into the teapot. I particularly appreciated this detail because the tea arrived at the perfect temperature rather than having already cooled by the time we were ready to enjoy it. The sandwiches were also enclosed under a glass dome, which helped keep them fresh while everything was being prepared and delivered.
Having everything waiting for us in the privacy of our room made the experience feel especially relaxing after the flight. There was no need to get dressed up again, navigate the city, or rush anywhere. We could simply settle in, make ourselves comfortable, pour the tea, and enjoy our first afternoon in London together.
For us, it was a lovely way to begin our London trip. It gave us exactly the kind of comfort and relaxation I had hoped for, while still feeling indulgent and special. After a long journey, there was something wonderful about simply walking through the hotel door and having a beautiful afternoon tea waiting for us. It made for a particularly memorable start to our birthday trip.
